Agender Pride Day – May 19th

Every gender and sexuality get a pride day, whether you know about them or not is a different situation. However, it’s time to learn – because Pride has never just been about celebration! It’s also about education and acknowledgement.

Agender Pride Day is May 19th. Agender is the term for being Genderless – for people who don’t identify as either binary, and for some it’s a case where they don’t feel particularly masculine or feminine.

There aren’t many Agender people out, publically, and most celebrates are Genderfluid, Genderqueer, or Transgender from what I’ve seen. However, one of my favourite rappers is Agender – they’re also Pansexual.

Angel Haze is a rapper from Detroit, they’re known for using – yeah, you guessed it – they/them pronouns. However, they commented on pronouns a while ago stating: “If you call me ‘him’ or ‘her’ it doesn’t matter to me. I don’t consider myself of any sex. I consider myself an experience” and that they are, Haze is a literal experience, and their music is fantastic – if you’re into rap at all, even if you’re not, I would recommend listening to their song Battle Cry featuring Sia. It’s perfect for running.

So, let’s go through some common misconceptions of Agender people:

  • Agender people, like any person under the Trans umbrella, can have Gender Dysphoria. However, also like anyone under the Trans umbrella – you do not need Gender Dysphoria to identify with a Trans and/or Non-Binary identity.
  • Agender people can use She/Her or He/Him pronouns. Some Agender people do feel masculine or feminine, that doesn’t change the fact that they’re Agender.
  • And finally, Agender people don’t have to identify as Bisexual or Pansexual. They can identify as Gay, Lesbian, and Straight if they choose.

Now, it’s time to talk about what you can do to raise awareness for Agender Pride day, because when I suggested to celebrate it – I got quite a few confused looks.

I want you to wear as much green as possible to work on May 20th – the day after Agender Pride Day – and then when someone asks: why are you wearing so much green? Just tell them that it’s for Agender Pride day.

We hope to see you do the same.
