50 Years Since the Stonewall Uprising

It’s been 50 years since the Stonewall Uprising. A lot has changed, but not
everything. And not enough.

We’ve come along way, there is still a long way to go.

Stonewall, the UK based Charity supporting GRSVP people, have noticed an
increase in violence against our community — an 80+% increase in
Anti-Trans/Hate Crimes in the UK — and it’s going to get worse before it gets
better.

With concentration camps hosting “immigrants” on stolen land —  a country
that is known for hating anyone who isn’t White, Straight, and Male — we can
only assume that this is going to get worse, and we’re going to be next on the
list.

The world is going barmy — it’s horrible how we’re treating other human
beings, and you’d think with all the historical documents we have on fascism
and capitalism being the worst kind of society, we’d stray from the repeating
cycle.

But instead, we’re just going straight back into it.

Neo-Nazis are having police escorts to our Pride events, people are shooting
into crowds and killing us, others are hunting us like animals. We’re being
beaten for being publicly ourselves, and we’re being fired for existing.

How on earth are we okay with going back to being in this situation? Who is
okay with this? Why are we standing for this?!

But it gets worse. Immigrants in the US are being detained in large numbers,
put into conditions that even the Taliban wouldn’t put upon their captives.

Survivors of Somali Pirates have even pointed out that they were given soap
and toothpaste as common decency — while the US government has commented that
those in their camps don’t need toothbrushes, paste, soap, or beds to be Safe
and Sanitary
. I’m not sure about you, but this sounds like the Nazi
regime.

A government that isn’t giving detainees enough food, hygiene products, and
lets not forget the highly cramped spaces they lived in because the number of
people per beds was around 5/1 — at least — does this sound like the Nazi
concentration camps or just the USA “detention camps” — personally, I think
both.

The issue I have, is that we know where this is going. The GRSVP has been
down this road along with our Jewish siblings, and everyone else the right-wing
see as undesirable. We know we’re going to be next, again. We know
that — it happened before and it’s happening again. But do you want to know
when the GRSVP community will care? When they’ll decide to stand up and help?
Probably a little too late. We need to help Immigrants NOW. We shouldn’t wait
until it’s a knife at OUR throats, we should be helping them now! We know
what’s happening, we’ve seen it before, we must help!

Just because it’s not 1969 outside of Stonewall, doesn’t mean we can’t have
another Uprising.
